- 1927 yılında Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Cumhurbaşkanı Mustafa Kemal, partisinin mebuslarının önünde sonradan Nutuk adıyla meşhur olacak uzun bir konuşma yaptı. Otuz altı saatten uzun bir süre boyunca, geleceğin Atatürk'ü ulusal bir devletin kuruluş öyküsünü anlattı. Birinci Dünya Savaşı'nın sonunda, bu asker İstanbul hükümetine karşı ayaklandı ve Sevr Antlaşması uyarınca İtilaf devletleri tarafından planlanan Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun parçalanmasını reddetti. Cumhuriyeti 29 Ekim 1923'te kurarak, Türkiye'yi Batıya açık, bağımsız ve laik bir ülke haline getirme amacını ilan etti.
