- Nella Larsen, Geçiş adlı romanında, ABD’de ırksal saflık arzusunun dayatıldığı 20. yüzyıl başlarında ırksal kimliğin karmaşıklığını ele alır. “Geçiş”, ten renginden siyahi kanı taşıdığı belli olmayanların, karma kökenlerini gizleyerek beyaz gibi davranmaları ve “ırksal sınırı” aşmaları anlamına gelir. Romanın bazı siyahi karakterleri kimi kolaylıklar; sözgelimi bir konser bileti alabilmek ya da bir restoranda yemek yiyebilmek için “geçer”; ancak bir yandan da siyahiler arasında yaşayıp ırksal kimliklerini kucaklarlar. Kimisi de beyazların arasında beyaz gibi yaşar ve köklerini bütünüyle reddeder ve gizler.
